Methods and tools to assess multi-hazard risk, vulnerability and resilience

The INQUIMUS 2018 Workshop will illustrate and discuss how quantitative and qualitative assessment methods could boost a transition toward a new generation of multi-hazard risk, vulnerability and resilience assessments. Particular attention will be paid to complex systems and network sciences’ methods (e.g. Bayesian networks, system dynamics, agent based models, machine learning) and to innovative digital technologies (e.g. big data applications, social media analytics, geospatial visualization tools) unlocking new knowledge and improving the understanding, analysis, communication and validation of risk information.

These topics will be addressed by scientists and practitioners working in different fields (geographers, physicists, statisticians, informatics, economists, environmental, social scientists etc.), to advance in cross-fertilization of concepts and sharing of best practices in different application contexts (environmental management, disaster risk reduction, emergency planning and climate change adaptation).

Key questions driving the discussion during the workshop will be:

  • Why do we need multi-risk assessments? (for example to improve risk perception, decision-making under uncertainty, adaptive policies, risk governance)
  • What are the gaps? (for example limitations of current multi-hazard/-risk assessment approaches)
  • What is new / innovative? (for example multi-risk tools considering different types of interactions with climate change, disasters and resilience management, spatial/temporal scales)
  • How can IT help us in understanding multi-risk dynamics and in validating? (for example big-data applications, machine learning, visualization tools, cloud platforms, GIS and Earth Observation)

As previous INQUIMUS meetings, this workshop will be moderated to foster a highly interactive and generative event. Conventional presentations will play a minor role. Invited keynotes will introduce the state-of-the-art of particular aspects followed by a focused discussion on current achievements and challenges. Case studies will be exhibited as posters and will accompany the workshop to provide further insights into the application of methodologies. The workshop will take place in Venice, Italy.

Call for Abstracts

Participation is mainly by invitation. However, we would like to provide room for additional participants to present their findings. Interested participants should send an abstract (max 400 words), discussing the following issues

Motivation for application and relevance to guiding questions listed above
Methods applied in scenario development
Achievements and challenges
Scientific merit and insights

IMPORTANT: We particularly welcome participation from researchers and practitioners contributing to methodological advancements and their applications. Please submit your abstract by July 15, 2018

Successful applications will be informed by mid-September 2018. Further information:
